Welcome to my new Substack, life update! I’m so glad this is finally up and running, albeit slightly earlier than I anticipated (I didn’t realised it had already launched so was still building it when people started subscribing, lol.) I’m buzzing to have a space to chat about all things trending; my friends have been encouraging me to start something like this as I’ve been chewing their ear off about niche internet cultural touch points for years, and I think I’ve found the perfect platform in Substack.
The name life update is poking fun at the genre of video that many creators, myself included, have been known to make when sharing some news about their life. Well-known for their melodramatic thumbnails, I thought it would be a funny way to illustrate what this newsletter is about.
My hope for life update is that it can be a cosy space, somewhere low pressure and free where things don’t have to be too polished. I want to write about how culture is playing out online, what’s trending, and the things I think about a lot now I’m paid to be chronically online. It also gives me a great excuse to start podcasting again. I’ve been keen to launch a follow up to The Sunday Social for over a year but never found quite the right format, or a final concept I’d be happy existing in a fully public forum. I hope this can be a more intimate stepping stone, easing me into podcasting again without the pressures of creating The New Thing™️ that shapes how people introduce me for the next three years.
At the moment, low pressure is the name of the game; I’m writing what I want and not committing to any new series or timeframe. I’m so excited to start creating in a new way — a feeling I haven’t had in a while — and I don’t want to jeopardise that, it feels precious.
All that’s left to say is thank you for being here, and thank you for subscribing. I’m so happy to be joining you in your inbox!
